I am an introverted observer, and I like to think my illustrations reflect my quiet presence in an everchanging and chaotic world. I find myself most comfortable and stimulated in environments most people would find fairly uncomfortable, such as busy flower markets, bustling bars and cafés and festivities and events. Such energetic environments allow me to play with colour, pattern and mark-making which are intrinsic to the way I like to record the visual landscape around me.
Primarily I work pencil to paper. I try to be as instinctive and spontaneous with my mark-making as possible, and I am forever teaching myself to not be scared of making ‘mistakes’. Sketching, recording and note-taking are therefore fundamental elements of my work process, and this then gives me the confidence to play with more experimental materials such as hand embroidery, collage and print.

I consider myself a collector and research is vital to my work process. I like to tackle complex and sensitive subject areas; attempting to unpick them through my drawing and making practices.
I also love portraiture and enjoy the often-infuriating challenge of capturing the quirks and idiosyncrasies of those around me. I have implemented drawing strangers into my daily routine which helps me to continue improving my figurative work as well as serving the basis for any character-based or narrative work I wish to explore. I am forever curious about the unseen worlds strangers carry within themselves. I like imagining what they might cook themselves for dinner, what they keep inside their bedroom, what they write inside their diary at night. When you take the time to stop and consider these miniature worlds, the illustrative possibilities are endless!
Most importantly for me, the expression of joy is at the core of all my creative practices. Some of my favourite artists such as Matisse, Bonnard and Gauguin have taught me to find happiness in an instinctive and expressive use of colour. I think of my artwork as a response to and an endless appreciation of the beauty of human experience.
